Japanese Chin Grooming Guide

The Japanese Chin appear to require extensive grooming, but they are actually a low-maintenance companion. Their luxurious coat is simple to maintain with a bath and a brush. It seldom becomes matted, with the rare exception of the fringes on their ears, tail and pants.

I believe in bathing your Japanese Chin once a week to keep the shedding down and them smelling great! After a bath, towel them off (don't rub with a towel as it tangles the hair but pat them) until they are 90% dry. I like to finish them off with a blow dryer (cold air) to make sure all the water is dry and not hiding in areas that could cause skin irritation. Brush your Japanese Chin out with a pin brush, comb or slicker brush, taking great care with the tail and ears. That's all there is to it!

The rest is basic care like trimming nails and brushing teeth. It's a good idea to keep your Japanese Chin's nails trimmed every week or two so they don't injure their eyes. The Chin's favorite game is slapping like a cat, so scratching their eyes is always a worry.  Also be sure any playmate for your Chin has short nails as well.

Essential Grooming Products

Throughout my journey with grooming products, I've experimented with countless options, yet I always find myself returning to Ashley Craig. Not only do these products deliver exceptional results, but they also boast the most delightful scents in my opinion. While I don't believe there's a single magic solution for all your grooming needs, this line comes remarkably close.

Slicker Brush

A slicker brush is perfect for removing tangles and loose fur, keeping your Japanese Chin's coat smooth and shiny.

Nylon Bore Bristle Brush

The best type of brush for styling your Japanese Chin is one that doesn't break the hair and leaves a shiny, polished finish.

Shampoo & conditioner

Ashley Craig system is my preference. Not only do they work good. They smell good. Check out the Blog for moreand how to's.

Nail Clippers

High-quality nail clippers ensure safe and precise trimming, preventing overgrowth & discomfort.

Greyhound Comb

The only comb you'll ever need—meticulously handcrafted and designed to glide through your hair without pulling or snagging.

Grooming Spray

Optical Brightening can be used as a brushing spray and applied before entering the show ring for that "final touch".

Dryer

My favorite dryer. It is on the quiter side of dryers and uses ionic technology.

Styptic Powfer

You need this on hand for those times you cut a nail too short. It will happen and it will bleed.

Colloidal Silver

A natural antibiotic and disinfectant.  Bacteria cannot grow where silver is present.
